About

The University Libraries and the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center of Seton Hall University have created a prototype for a digital rare objects repository, which we believe can be replicated by other institutions with limited resources. In particular we have in mind the smaller institutions that are part of our network of U.S. Catholic universities, seminaries and monasteries that could benefit from this technology and smaller countries in the Balkans (with which we have on-going partnerships). This Rare Artifacts Database uses our existing university infrastructure, a MySQL database, and a free application called Zoomify.

The project was motivated both by the desire to make more accessible unique artifacts housed in the University's Special Collections Center and by the growing awareness that these artifacts are essential to an understanding of the Catholic American experience in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The requirements were relatively simple: the digitized artifacts would be available freely on the WWW; the project would utilize free software for the user and possibly the back end in order to keep costs down, the look and feel of the artifact would have to be maintained, and there would have to be flexibility to investigate the entire artifact.
